International Day of Older Persons 1 October

On today’s International Day of Older Persons, we call on policymakers and governments to end violence against elderly women! Elderly people are exposed to neglect, physical, sexual, psychological, and financial abuse. All of these forms of abuse can be perpetrated by spouse/partner, adult children, grandchildren, other relatives or care takers.

We call on policymakers and governments to end elder abuse against women with these policy recommendations.

Launch of new drama-based education materials in Two Moons

The The Two Moons partnership has launched two new resources aimed at enhancing older persons knowledge of their human rights. These resources can also be used by educators to raise awareness of older people’s human rights among stakeholders, students and wider society.

The first resource is a documentary theatre script “Our Stories: Human Rights and Older People in Europe” created using a documentary theatre approach.  The Two Moon Documentary Theatre script brings to life, stories older people tell of situations where their rights have been infringed. The stories were collected by partners through interviews with older persons in Ireland, Italy, Romania and Finland. These interviews are conveyed through monologues linked together as a script for a play.

The second resource is the “Guide to hosting the Two Moons Documentary Theatre performance and talkback”. It outlines the process for hosting the Two Moons Documentary Theatre performance and talkback and provides information on the individual elements of the play and talkback which need to be considered from the planning stage to the production, performing and facilitation to the promotion.

15th June – World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

The UN General Assembly has designated June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Elder abuse is an increasing and serious problem that affects health and human rights so it is vital to raise awareness of it and thus prevent it whenever and wherever possible.

VoiVa Coop’s on-going Erasmus+ projects Two Moons and TISOVA aim to prevent and raise awareness of violence against older people. Two Moons project specifically focuses on older people’s human rights. For the WEAAD this year, the project partners co-created a campaign video on older people’s human rights. See it below.

Two Moons project 3rd newsletter published

The Erasmus+ funded “Two Moons” education programme is proud to present its new output ‘Our Stories: Human Rights and Older People in Europe – A documentary theatre script’. It recounts in the words of older persons living in Finland, Ireland, Italy and Romania, the lived experiences of not having their human rights respected in situations they encounter in their day to day life. The script is taken verbatim from research interviews, and edited into short monologues with a particular ‘take home point’ the infringement of rights protected under the European Convention on Human Rights and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. The monologues are linked together into a play.

Two Moons project 2nd newsletter

The Two Moons partnership launched its first output, the booklet
“My Human Rights, My Well-Being: Older People’s Experiences” in
four languages as part of Un International Day of Older People on
1 October 2019. The booklet collates stories illustrating how the human rights of older people are infringed using experiences of older people in the four participating countries. Stories have been collected through interviews and focus groups, and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities used as a framework for illustrating infringements and in this way make human rights relevant to the lives of older people, policy-makers and service providers.

The 2 Moons partnership is now engaged in the development of the 2nd project output: “Our Stories: Human Rights and Older People in Europe- a documentary theatre script”. This output focuses on developing a script from six stories that highlight human rights infringements experienced by older people.

SAFE project press release – 3rd output published

The Erasmus+ SAFE partnership announces the launch of its third intellectual output, a policy paper on prevention and intervention in cases of violence against older women.

The aim of this document is to strengthen and sustain the capacity of public, government, nongovernment organizations and service providers to prevent, identify and respond in an adequate manner to violence and abuse of older women. It will be strongly connected with the VET educator/trainers who educate and train future social and health care professionals and teachers/trainers for the field of elder abuse.

It also introduces strategic principles and general guidelines for prevention, identification and response to suspected or identified cases of violence and abuse. It gives recommendations for the services, identification and response, multi-agency work, promoting public awareness and education and training.

TISOVA project’s online course is now open

The online course on How to Identify & Support Older Victims of Abuse, created in partnership in the Erasmus + funded TISOVA project and administered by the University of Tartu, will begin on November 4th, 2019. The course is particularly aimed at professionals who work at senior/day care centres, volunteers and senior citizens. The course seeks to provide the target groups with the skills to identify and provide assistance to older adults who have experienced abuse and neglect. A certification of a completed course will be provided.

Two Moons project marking UN International Day of Older Persons

In keeping with the 2019 theme “The Journey to Age Equality”, the Erasmus+ funded ‘Two Moons’ project, a 2-year pan-European initiative, is making available My Human Rights, My Wellbeing booklet in four languages, English, Finnish, Italian and Romanian. This booklet highlights the inequalities older persons in Europe experience in their daily life. It aims to raise awareness among older persons of their rights as protected under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD); and by so doing empower them to safeguard their well-being. The stories also draw attention to the existence of age inequalities and the societal and structural issues such as ageism which permit older people to be treated differently and denied their rights.

The 2nd newsletter of SAFE project has been published

The newsletter discusses the results of project Output 1  “How social and health services, police forces and judicial authorities can work together to tackle abuse against older women”, the Training for Trainers organised in December 2018 in Romania and the Output 2 training curriculum piloting results and experiences from the partner countries.

With a growing global population of elderly people, and as longevity increases, abuse of the elderly is an increasing and serious problem that affects health and human rights and can cause death, so it is vital to raise awareness of it and thus prevent it whenever and wherever possible.

VoiVa Coop’s on-going Erasmus+ projects SAFE (Safer Life for Older Women), TISOVA (Training to Identify and Support Older Victims of Abuse) and Two Moons all aim to prevent and raise awareness of violence against older people.
